FAQ'S

How many participants are allowed in each event? There are no caps on events now that the Mann’s Harbor Bridge is closed to traffic.

 

What will the water temperature be?

The water in the sound typically hovers in the low to mid 70's. The water is brackish, a mix of fresh and salt water.

Here is the regulation from USAT:

Wetsuits:

Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wetsuit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wetsuit at their own discretion, provided, however that participants who wears a wetsuit within such temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Above 84 degrees, wetsuits are prohibited.

2015 was the first year we had high water temps and we added an extra wave for those swimmers who wanted to wear a wetsuit. This will be determined the morning of the race. This wave is the last wave to Start.

Does everyone get a medal?

All finishers in all races receive a medal. Each event has a custom medals design that varies from year to year.

Are Headphones allowed?

Headphones, headsets, earbuds, Walkmans, iPod, or personal audio devices, etc. are not to be carried or worn at any time during the race.

What kind of helmet should I wear?

Only helmets approved by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) may be used in USAT sanctioned events. Helmets must be worn at all times while on your bike. This means before, during, and after the event.

Tell me about the Transition Area.

All equipment must be placed in the properly designated and individually assigned bike corral. The wheel of the bicycle must be down on the side of the assigned space. All participants must return their bicycles to an upright position in their designated bicycle corral. No person shall interfere with another participant's equipment or impede the progress of another participant. All bar ends must be solidly plugged. No participant shall bring ANY glass containers into the transition area.

 

How many years has this event been around?

Outer Banks Sporting Events has produced this event since 2010.
The Outer Banks Triathlon has been held for almost 30 years at this location.

Is there a runner's Expo?

No, there is no Expo. However, there will be an opportunity to purchase special Outer Banks Triathlon retail items on site.

Outer Banks TRI Store will be at the site with essentials for athletes. Bring some dough!

If I already registered and I cannot participate in the race, am I able to receive a refund, transfer my registration to someone else or transfer to next year?

Entry fees are NON-REFUNDABLE and NON-TRANSFERABLE.  Once we receive and accept your entry, you will not receive a refund if you cannot participate.  You may not give or sell your number to anyone else. You also may not transfer your registration to the following year.

Where do I pick up my Triathlon packet?

Packet Pick-Up/Registration: Will be next to the NC Aquarium - 374 Airport Road, Manteo NC 27954

It is near the Pavilion, south of the Aquarium. It is not inside the aquarium building.

Can I pick up my friend's packet?

No, each participant must pick up their own packet per USAT sanctioning rules.

 This policy has been posted on-line since registration opened.  All of our participants are notified that pick up is in person when they receive the confirmation email after they register. No exceptions!

A photo ID, your USAT ID (if you have one) and your bib number is required.

I do not have my bib number.  I've only got the printout  with a confirmation number.  How do I pick up my packet?

You will need your bib number and photo ID.  You can also look up that information on the It’s Your Race APP. You will be emailed your bib number in advance of the event.

In the event you do not have this information with you may look up your information at the packet pickup area.

If I cannot participate in the race, am I still able to receive my t-shirt?

You may pick up your shirt at packet pickup even if you do not plan on participating. We do not mail packets nor t-shirts. 

Can I register or pick up my bib the day of the race?

There will be registration if there are spots available. Participant shirt is not guaranteed.

Packet pick-up on race day is available prior to the race for the participant from 6:00am to 6:30 am. Time prior to the race is busy and we prefer that participants pick up packets on Friday 2-6 or Saturday 2-6. to avoid problems.

What time do the races start?

Where should I park on race day?

Across the street from the NC Aquarium there is a large grass field. Look for the signs for parking and the parking attendants.

There is no parking in the Aquarium lot.

Is gear check available?  What are the hours?

There is no gear check for the Triathlon. Please keep track of your personal items. We will have a OBSE retail items available and Outer Banks TRI Store will be there with essentials. Cash and credit cards are accepted!

OBSE is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Lost and found is located at the Packet Pickup tent.

Is there an age minimum for any of the races?

Participants must be at least 16 years of age and a parent or guardian must sign for all participants over 16 but under 18 on race day.

How long will the course be open?

The Saturday course support stops at 3:30pm. Sunday the course support stops at 11:30pm. The course is mostly open to all traffic all the time. The run thru the airport will have the limits on them.

How many hydration stations are there and what is at each hydration station?

Water and Gatorade will be served at the EACH MILE MARKER. 

What time are the awards ceremonies?

Saturday Awards begin at 11:30AM

Sunday Awards begin at 11:30AM

What if I am not present to receive my award?

If you are not present and you want us to send you the award by mail, please visit www.outerbankstriathlon.com/Awards. Download the awards claim form and submit with the appropriate fee for shipping and handling.

Are there any other OBSE events?

Outer Banks Sporting Events hosts the TowneBank Outer Bank Marathon & Southern Fried Half Marathon on Veterans Day weekend in November. This weekend includes a Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 4 Challenges an 8K, 5K and a Fun Run and a 10K fun run, the Southern 6.

In April we present the Flying Pirate Half Marathon and First Flight 5K. A full weekend of Pirate themed fun!

In June OBSE presents Storm the Beach. The only obstacle course held on the beautiful beaches in Nags Head.
